A day in Palma

Palma is large enough for discovery and compact enough for a day without haste. Gothic architecture, traces of the city’s Islamic past, working markets, contemporary shops and the open light of the bay sit close together. This is not a checklist, but a sequence: from a monumental building to smaller details, ending with a wider view.

1. La Seu and Parc de la Mar

Morning light is particularly clear around the cathedral. La Seu defines Palma’s edge towards the sea and remains one of the city’s essential landmarks. Inside, the Gothic volume meets interventions by Antoni Gaudí and Miquel Barceló. Parc de la Mar creates the distance needed to see the building in its urban setting.

2. Through the old town to the Arab Baths

Behind the cathedral begins a network of lanes, courtyards and stone façades. The Banys Àrabs are a quiet fragment of Palma’s Islamic history. The route towards them matters as much as the destination: doors, patios and small workshops reveal a city that does not show everything at once.

3. Market time and a light lunch

Depending on the day and the mood, Mercat de l’Olivar or Mercat de Santa Catalina makes a natural pause. There is no need to try everything. A few tapas, fish, cheese or seasonal fruit are enough. These are working markets rather than showrooms, best experienced with attention and without hurry.

4. Craft and contemporary Palma

Passeig del Born and Avinguda de Jaume III present the city’s more polished side. The surrounding streets are often more revealing, with local ceramics, leather, jewellery, books and fashion from smaller studios and shops. Together they offer a view of Palma beyond international brands.

5. Bellver Castle and the bay

The final stop rises above the city at Bellver Castle. Its circular Gothic form houses Palma’s history museum and opens towards the city, harbour and bay. Late afternoon brings the day together: the streets just explored become part of a single landscape.
